My teaching philosophy
As a physical education teacher, I feel it is my priority to make fitness fun.
There are far too many adults who have horror stories of their physical education
classes. The embarrassment of everyone being lined up and doing a fitness test
in front of the entire class, or scoring two points while the other team scored
20, or being forced to participate/fail in the same sports year after year come
to mind. Let's not even mention having the most popular kids in the class pick
teams, and the humiliation of being picked last. For many, the scars of their
prior physical education totally inhibit them from trying anything physical
as an adult. It is my job to prepare students for a lifetime. I strive to foster
a healthy attitude about exercise, and a positive self-worth.
My philosophy in action
It is my belief that participation always takes precedence over competition.
The value is in playing the sport, learning the skills, enjoying the comradery
of others and the healthful benefits of all the above.
My greatest teaching accomplishment
As an advocate of lifetime recreational activities, I am pleased that many of
my students have chosen to participate in such activities as adults, enabling
them to pursue a healthy lifestyle.
The most critical issues facing educators today
A critical issue facing education today is the lack of knowledge regarding what
is taking place in schools among community members. This lack of knowledge correlates
to lack of support.
Ways to resolve this issue
Educate the public through involvement in our schools.
One thought to inspire teachers to succeed
One afternoon, a somewhat familiar-looking young adult comes up to your desk
and says, "Thank you, you helped make me who I am today."
One lesson every student should learn
Opportunities aren't delivered - you must go out and seek them.
