Here I am at Ranchlands Elementary School. This school is in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This is a picture of me on the hill behind the school looking out over the city skyline. That is the downtown in the background. If I turn around I can see the mountains to the west. If I look south I can see the ski jumps they built for the 1988 Olympics. This is an amazing city!

I started my journey in Calgary, Alberta Canada. The students at Ranchlands were so excited about their country that they shared a lot of cool Canadian information and things with me. They told me about Canadian inventions, weather, sports and food. It is a great country!

I learned about a true Canadian hero while at Ranchlands School. Every year, Ranchlands School participates in a run to commemorate Terry Fox’s attempt to run across Canada to raise funds for Cancer research. This year Ranchlands School raised over $5000.00 for Cancer research with my help. Terry Fox is special because he was a 22-year-old who had had one leg amputated due to cancer and he tried to run across Canada with an artificial leg to raise money for research.

It is too bad I could not come to Calgary during July. That is when they have the Calgary Stampede. It is “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”! People come from all over the world to watch the rodeo and chuckwagon races, go to the fairground, eat pancakes and dance to country music. Yahoo!

While in Calgary, I met a lot of other cool bears. They told me about things they have done and places they have been that I did not have time to visit. For example, they told me about the Calgary Zoo and an amusement park called Calaway Park.

I am a very sad bear. The students have all been telling me about this great hockey team they have here called the Calgary Flames. I was hoping to get to see a game but there is strike/lock out on. After the great year the Flames had last year (they went to the seventh game of the Stanley Cup finals) everyone was excited for this year. The students shared with me a lot of their Flames things. They must look really good when they are a “Sea of Red”.

One of the best parts of my stay in Calgary was going to school every day with the grade six students at Ranchlands Elementary. In the classroom there are 65 students and 3 teachers this year. It can be a very busy place but it is great to be all together for this last year at Ranchlands.

Ranchlands School is very lucky to have its own music room and teacher. The students and I got to go to music classes 2 or 3 times a week. I really loved all the instruments that I learned how to play. My favorite was the recorder.

Ranchland’s school mascot is the Rattler. Whenever they participate in special activities the students get points for their house colour. At the end of the year the team with the most points gets their color painted on the Rattler in the gym. I got to be in the Yellow house.

Ranchlands School is on a fairly busy street. Lots of students have to cross that street to get to school. There are some special grade six students called Patrols, who stop the traffic and help the children cross. They work with a policeman to learn how to keep our students safe. I was such a responsible bear I was chosen to join the team.

Ranchlands School is very lucky because a few years ago a group of the parents got together and built a new playground for the students. When I was there the weather was nice enough for me to spend lots of time at recess and lunch playing on it.

I was able to go on a field trip with the students from Ranchlands. We got on a school bus and drove for an hour west of the city into the mountains where we went to the Jumping Pound Demonstration Forest. Here we learned a lot about trees and animals that live in our forests. We also learned about what forests are used for. It was a beautiful day. I was on the look out for my relatives but I did not run into any.
